Canon EOS
The first camera model produced under the Canon EOS series was the Canon EOS 650 in 1987. Since then Canon has released so far nearly 50 EOS SLR camera models. Similarly, the first wholly designed and manufactured digital EOS SLR camera by Canon was the EOS D30 in 2000. Earlier, Canon sourced its digital camera bodies from Kodak.
The top-line EOS cameras, such as, EOS-3, EOS-1v, and the EOS-1D have up to 45 AF (auto focus) points. Older Canon DSLRs usually have seven-point AF points. For models, such as, EOS-1Ds Mk II, EOS-1D Mk II N, the central column of 1 or 2 sensors are cross-type sensors. This offers a high degree of accuracy.
While EOS 20D and the Rebel XTi (400D) have 45 auto focus points, EOS 1000D is an exception. The advantage of such large number of AFs is that it increases the chances of sharply-focused photographs particularly to film sports events. It also helps relieve the photographer from having to use the 'lock focus and recompose' method of framing a photograph. At the same time, EOS cameras allow the selection of an AF point manually as well.
All Canon DSLRs introduced since late 2005, feature a nine-point AF system in a diamond-shape formation. With the EOS 5D, released in 2005, Canon introduced six more 'invisible' AF points, a system that helps camera acquire focus faster during subject tracking. Canon's latest professional SLRs, the EOS-1D Mk III and EOS-1Ds Mk III have 19 cross-type sensors for higher accuracy, as well as placing the cross-type sensors to complement the Rule of Thirds.
The EOS cameras enjoyed the reputation of having the most number of auto focus points until Nikon came out with its D3 and D300 digital SLR cameras with 51 auto focus points.
On September 1, 2009 Canon announced the EOS 7D digital SLR. This model boasts a new 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 4 processors, ISO range expandable to 12800, continuous shooting at 8 fps and full HD video recording. The EOS 7D model also includes a new view finder with 1.0x magnification and 100% coverage and a 3 inch LCD with 920k dot resolution.
